The Department of Health (DH) has issued a public consultation on a proposed amendment to the UK’s prescription drug guidelines for erectile dysfunction.
The proposed amendment to the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) would amend the guidelines in the first instance to reflect the risks and benefits of taking Viagra to treat erectile dysfunction, the MHRA said.
The amendment would also recommend that prescribing clinicians consider the prescribing of other drugs in the same class as those for erectile dysfunction.
“There is considerable interest in the development of further changes to the prescribing of Viagra to treat erectile dysfunction,” said Dr Sarah Thompson, DH’s Chief Medical Officer for Practice and Community Health, in a press statement.
The MHRA said it would investigate the proposed amendment and recommend that it be extended to include all drugs for erectile dysfunction.
The amendment proposes to amend the guidelines to include not only sildenafil (Viagra), the branded medication for erectile dysfunction, but also tadalafil (Cialis), which treats erectile dysfunction.
In February, the MHRA said it was reviewing the proposed amendment, which includes sildenafil, as part of a ‘bioequivalent’ prescription drug regime for erectile dysfunction.
“The amendment would also encourage prescribing clinicians to consider prescribing other drugs in the same class as those for erectile dysfunction,” the MHRA said.
“These drugs are available in many branded and generic forms and have a higher proportion of cardiovascular, gastrointestinal and other health benefits than Viagra.
“These drugs are known to be associated with fewer side effects than Viagra.
“It is important that prescribers ensure the prescribing clinicians are aware of all the potential risks and benefits associated with prescribing sildenafil to treat erectile dysfunction.
“Patients should be advised that sildenafil is a safe and appropriate treatment for erectile dysfunction, and that they have a legitimate choice of treatment.
“In addition, the MHRA is committed to working with clinicians and patient groups to develop and implement effective prescription guidelines for all prescription medicines, including sildenafil, for erectile dysfunction.
“We are committed to supporting the use of sildenafil as part of a comprehensive prescription healthcare regime for the treatment of erectile dysfunction.”
The draft of the amendment was submitted to DH’s Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency on Friday, January 16, 2015. The draft was approved by the MHRA on the 23rd, January 2023.The draft was reviewed by the Department of Health on the 25th, March 2023, and by the Department of Social and Economic Affairs on the 26th, March 2023. The draft amendment was reviewed again by the MHRA on the 27th, March 2024.
The draft amendment is proposed by the MHRA to include sildenafil, the branded medication for erectile dysfunction, and tadalafil (Cialis). It is also recommended that patients consult a doctor before taking the medication.
A separate review of the draft amendment was carried out by the Department of Social and Economic Affairs on the 27th, January 2024.
