A recent study of Viagra, also known by its brand name sildenafil, found that men who took the drug had an increased risk of heart attack, stroke and other cardiovascular problems compared to those who took the placebo, according to the researchers.
The study, published in theJournal of the American Heart Associationin May, was led by Dr. Robert W. Schafer, a leading cardiologist at Brigham and Women’s Hospital who has treated millions of men since 1998. He said the study is the first large-scale study in the country to show the effects of Viagra, and it was published today in the. The researchers looked at the data of 10,000 men who took the drug and compared it to placebo.
The men who took the drug were about half as likely as those who took the placebo to have a statistically significant increase in the risk of heart attack, a finding by the University of Pennsylvania’sHeart Disease Association
Researchers said the findings were statistically significant because they did not find that the men who took the drug had a statistically significant increase in the risk of any of the other cardiovascular events, including stroke.
“This was a big step forward in our analysis of cardiovascular risk in the men who took the drug,” said Schafer, who is currently the chief scientific officer at theNew England Journal of MedicineHe said the study was the first to show that men who took Viagra were at an increased risk of heart attack and stroke.
“We found that men who took Viagra had a slightly greater increase in cardiovascular events compared to those who took the placebo,” he said.
A study of the men who took the drug in a placebo-controlled study of more than 5,000 men in 2023 found that those who took Viagra had a greater risk of heart attack than those who took the drug.
Schafer said the study was the first to report a significant increase in heart attack and stroke.
“We’ve shown the safety and effectiveness of Viagra and its generic alternatives,” he said.
“This study was conducted in part because of a huge concern that men who take these drugs, who have heart disease, who have coronary disease or who are at increased risk of cardiovascular disease are more likely to be at a higher risk of a stroke or heart attack,” he said.
Researchers said they believe the results of this study are important because they provide strong evidence that men who take Viagra, and those who take the drugs, were at an increased risk of heart attack, stroke and other cardiovascular events.
“We’re excited about the findings from this study,” said Dr. Paul D’Amico, an assistant professor of medicine at Northwestern University’s Feinberg School of Medicine.
